A Tribute to Max in Wales: Psappha, Hebrides Ensemble, Benyounes Quartet & Ensemble Cymru

Transfigured Night on Saturday 12th November at the Studio, Pontio Arts and Innovation Centre is the central part of a unique event which brings together leading chamber and contemporary music ensembles from across the UK – Psappha (Manchester), Hebrides Ensemble (Scotland), the Benyounes Quartet (London) and Ensemble Cymru (Wales) in a joyous celebration of new music as a tribute to the late Sir Peter Maxwell Davies.

A Tribute to Max in Wales features The Benyounes Quartet performing the World Premiere of Simon Bainbridge’s Quartet No. 2 in a special prelude concert at 6:45pm. Hebrides Ensemble and Psappha’s Transfigured Night programme follows at 7:30pm, and begins with Peter Maxwell Davies’s The Last Island, brought to life for the first time in a beautiful new film of the Holms of Ire, the Orkney Island which inspired him throughout his life. This is followed by the world premiere of David Fennessy’s dazzling Panopticon. The second half of the programme features Schoenberg’s exquisite string sextet Transfigured Night and concludes with Sir Peter Maxwell Davies’ exuberant Farewell to Stromness in a new arrangement by David Horne for six strings and cimbalom.

The evening concludes with a free post-concert event in Bar Ffynnon at 9:15pm where members of north-Wales based chamber music group, Ensemble Cymru, and the Benyounes Quartet will perform music specially written by young composers of 58³Ô¹Ï’s School of Music.
